I did this in order to make it easier for me when filming, and when doing a shot breakdown for my video, it will help me as I will know how each clip will fit in with the lyrics and the timings of the video, rather than having to edit it to work when I come to the editing stage.

Music Video Treatment

Treatment:

Artist: You me at Six
Track title: Lived a Lie
Director: Jasmine Ewart

Summary: This music video tells the story of a young girl who feels as though she is 'living a lie' and pretending to be someone she is not. By the end of the video her look changes a lot and you see her more comfortable to express herself. You see the journey she goes through, and you also see shots of the band singing the song as though they are telling us her story.

This video will be mainly focused on a young girl, where at the start of the video she appears to be a very normal teenager, with her hair and makeup done nicely, her clothes are feminine and typical of girls her age.
You see her then begin to look much more upset, and more angry, she then begins to take off her makeup, and let her hair down. These shots will be in slow motion, I will use the adobe premiere elements editing software on the computers to get this effect, to show the shots almost as unreal, and to show the contrast to the next shots which will be of her running through a field, showing her to be much more free, and dressed in different clothes looking more comfortable.

Throughout the whole video there will be shots of the band playing the song. It will be almost as though they are telling the story of the girl as you see her go through it. I will also incorporate some shots of the band outside, even if they are not playing any instruments, as it will bring together the band and the girl through the audience seeing them in the same setting, even if it is at different times during the video. Some of the shots of the band will be in black and white, which is something I will achieve through editing the shots on the computer after filming them.

In the shots one of the main focuses will be the mise-en-scene, for example in the shots of my female character outside in the fields, I want to do it in the evening so that it is fairly dark, and make 2 lines of tea lights the form a path for her to walk through, as well as some of her reading a book. And in the shots of my band I will include instruments and costume to make it look more realistic. The costume will be a very important part in telling the story for both the girl, and for the band. The costume is a very significant part of the story the female character goes through, going from very typical and feminine, to much more alternative and individual. For the band I want their clothes to reflect the look of a real band so that people find it more believable.

My method for making this video will be to first storyboard the shots so that I can be accurate with my filming and know what I need to get done, as well as making it easier to organise when and where I need to film. Following this I will film my band and my main female character separately and out the shots together when it comes to editing.

Permission to use the song, You Me at Six- 'Lived a Lie'

I sent an email to the management of the band 'You me at Six' to ask for permission to use the song 'Lived a Lie', below is a screenshot of this email, and another screenshot below that showing the contact details;

If they send me a reply I will put a screenshot of it on a separate post!

Costume Ideas for my Music Video: The Band

Below is a mood board of some of the ideas I have for how I want my band to look. I want them to look like a fairly typical band, it will only contain two band members, and they are both male. Their look stays constant throughout the video. I do want them to look a bit different to most boy bands you see, in slightly more alternative and individual clothes.

Representation in Music Videos

Gender Representation

In Music Videos today, males and females are represented in very different ways, even among all genres there are still similarities in how they are portrayed. Below I have discussed some of the key points of how men and women are represented and the difference between them, along with some example videos in which the representation is particularly obvious.

Males:
- High Status, men are often represented to be very important, shown in the clothes they wear and how they act throughout the video.
- 'Players', this shows men to be very popular with women, having lots of submissive girls surrounding them.
- Dominant
- Rich, lots of money, emphasizing their high status.
- Gang- orientated, often with other men around them who are backing them up, acting as a gang.
- Violence
- 'Macho', this shows a males strong image, being able to do things that women can't, coming 'to the rescue'.
- Some are the opposite, 'Poets', playing guitar.
-Follow the same trends, none that particularly stand out as being unique or individual.

Females:
- Shown to be sad and heartbroken, they are very emotional and vulnerable.
- They have a lot of performance in their videos, with lots of dancing.
- They often wearing revealing or provocative clothing, as they are usually objects of sex appeal, some example of this could be things like Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, a very controversial video revealing women to be sex objects.
- Women tend to be much more experimental/individual, and very creative, such as Lady Gaga or Katy Perry.
- Their videos are usually more focused on relationships than male artist's videos.

Example Videos:
Scouting for Girls- 'She's so Lovely'
This video shows different types of males being represented. It shows the 'typical' male, which is a man surrounded by submissive women, being powerful and dominant, this was the 'boyfriend' in the video. There was also the representation of the main male in the video, the one who is singing the majority of the song, and he is shown more as the 'poetic' male, who doesn't have loads of girlfriends, and doesn't look at women in the same way as the males represented as 'players'. There are lots of parts of the video in which we see 'the male gaze', which shows how men look at women, and how he is admiring her throughout the video.

Natasha Beddingfield- 'I Wanna Have your Babies'

This music video is about a woman idealising a man, (wanting to 'have his babies'). Although there are still lots of shots of Natasha Bedingfield wearing not very much clothing, and lots of shots of her that would be considered sexual. There are also scenes in which you see other women in bikinis when at the same time there is a man fully clothed. This shows how the music video often contradicts the lyrics of the song in how genders are represented.

Beyonce- 'Run the World'

This video is also very focused on women having power, which goes against the stereotype, although in a different way to lots of other videos that go against stereotypes. It is very exaggerated in the way it shows women's power, through their body movement and dancing, they are very physically intimidating.

Christina Aguilera- 'Candyman'

This video is set in a past time, so it is supposed to be different, although it shows women to be very objectified by the men. Women are represented in this in a very different way than we are used to seeing nowadays, although it shows us what was fairly normal during that time. In this, Christina Aguilera is being very experimental and individual, which is something much more typical of women currently, as men tend to all have very similar looks, and very similar, more simple videos.

Robin Thicke- 'Blurred Lines'
This video is very controversial and is a very good example of showing women as objects and showing men being surrounded by submissive women, although much more emphasized than in many other music videos with similar representation. Women in this video wear little to no clothing, whereas men are wearing suits, and are fully clothed, showing them as 'dominant' and 'rich' males.

Makeup, Hair and Costume Ideas for my Video: Main Female Character

Below, I have posted some ideas for how I want the hair, makeup and costume to look for my main female character in my music video. The look at the start of the video will be very different from the look at the end, so I have put pictures for both the beginning and the end of the video. I will be doing a separate post on how I want my band members to look throughout the video, as their look will not change.

My Chosen Song

You Me at Six- 'Lived a Lie'
My idea for this video is to have interchanging shots between a young girl and shots of a band playing the song. The girl would start off looking very typical and girly, wearing nice makeup, perhaps a dress, with her hair done nicely. You would then see her begin to take her makeup off and after that you would see shots in which her clothing has changed, her hair is more messy, and she looks very different. I want to film some of it in a field, showing the girl there, with lots of tea lights/ candles on the ground.
